Jessica Pita is PADI's first South African blind scuba diver. She has a condition called optic atrophy, caused by a brain tumour that pressed on her optic nerves when she was 11. After it was removed, her central vision turned completely black, but with pinpricks of light that almost look like stars. This hasn't stopped her from becoming an avid diver however and a disability activist who encourages more people to discover the wonders of the underwater world.

MFP's photo team spent time photographing Jessica and her diving buddy Henry Green during their dives in Madagascar. To learn more about Jessica's inspirational journey and how you can become involved in diving you can read the article here .

�� The scholarship’s focus is on training Malagasy nationals in wildlife and environmental filmmaking and photography. Its ultimate goal is to create awareness around conservation and help to empower a new generation of impactful Malagasy storytellers. ��

�� Thanks to Wildscreen’s support, Herizo will receive a salary and the Aina Madagascar Film Fellowship will cover his travel and living expenses.

WEACT COOKSTOVE PHOTOGRAPHY SHOOT

MFP recently worked with WeAct to document the cookstove project they support in Madagascar. WeAct provides fuel efficient cookstoves to households that reduce the amount of firewood needed to cook. This in turn decreases deforestation and local emissions - and improves health, income and employment opportunities for local communities. Goff traveled with the WeAct crew to Fianarantsoa to photograph in the factories that make the cookstoves and the homes of local community members that are using the stoves.

The award recognises Mamy’s work to protect forests and help biodiversity and people in communities in NW Madagascar. We have worked with Mamy on multiple film projects over the years and have seen first hand the vital work that he and the team are doing. We had a fantastic time working with the RISE Our World Heritage team and Vatosoa Rakotondrazafy of Beolobe . The RISE project aims to show, act and advocate on how we can combine local knowledge and know-how, sciences and new technologies to provide innovative and efficient solutions to the problems of climate change (adaptation and mitigation) and biodiversity all around the world.

MFP not only filmed for and got the necessary film and aviation permits for the team in Madagascar but Chris Scarffe, MFP’s co-founder also features in the film. Chris took @nicolas_plain, founder of RISE, underwater to show him the incredible reefs and marine life as well as the threats facing them. We are looking forward to seeing the finished film!

DAUGHTERS OF THE DEEP: INAUGURAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Madagascar Film & Photography has donated its film and photography services to help to raise funds for a new non-profit organisation called Daughters of the Deep (DOTD). DOTD mission is to give young women who have a passion for the ocean, the confidence and opportunity to try diving, or master the sciences and to break through social barriers.

This is DOTD inaugural scholarship program and the lucky recipient Mary J eanne comes from our home base in Nosy Komba in northwest Madagascar. Goff was the director and principal camera operator of the short film and he was on hand to film Mary J eanne's first steps into the marine realm and sciences. The film will be used in conjunction with DOTD’s fundraising efforts to raise more money to give opportunities to m ore young women. If you would like to donate to the project then go to the DOTD website . 100% of all donations go to funding further initiatives.

We would like to say a special thank you to the fantastic team at MRCI who are collaborating with DOTD to provide the on ground support for Mary Jane and to our good filmmaker friend and conservationist Andrea Ferrari ( @andreaferrariunderwater ) for making the project happen.

A big day for MFP's founder Chris! Eyes of the Orangutan a documentary that investigates the orangutan wildlife tourism industry premieres tonight. The documentary is made in partnership with Terra Mater Factual Studio, the producers of the critically acclaimed environmental documentaries Sea of Shadows and The Ivory Game . The film is being distributed by Off the Fence who were behind the Oscar winning film My Octopus Teacher .

Chris hopes the documentary will be a wake up call for orangutan tourism in the same way that Blackfish was for orcas.

In breaking news! MFP is proud to announce that Chris's photo was the runner up in the Mangroves & Landscape category of the 2020 World Mangrove Day Photography Awards. The picture is of the stunning mangroves in Antsahampano in northwest Madagascar, with the island of Nosy Komba in the background. A location that holds a special place in my heart as not only are mangroves one of my favourite environments to film, photograph and spend time in but also because this is where I got to know the love of my life Leah Glass who along with local communities and her incredible colleagues at Blue Ventures does so much good work to conserve them.

I hope that these photography awards highlight the importance of mangroves worldwide and in particular in Madagascar, where my picture was taken and I now call home. Mangroves are rich ecosystems that support the planet and people in unique ways, from storing carbon, to protecting habitats and villages against flooding, and as breeding grounds for fish. Unfortunately, despite their importance, mangrove forests are under severe threat. In Madagascar alone, more than 20% of mangroves have been lost over the last 30 years. In this region of the country a mangrove area equivalent to almost 800 football pitches is being lost every year.

In addition to climate change and sea level rise, there are also local threats. These include overharvesting of wood for fuel and construction, dams and irrigation that reduce the flow of water reaching the forests, and overfishing causing disruption to food chains and fish communities.

I would like to say a special thanks to Leah Glass & Michel "Goff" Strogoff for sharing their in depth knowledge of the area and help in getting in the perfect position to capture the photograph. In addition I would like to say a big thank you to Ruth Leeney of Protect Africa’s Sawfish for commissioning me to film and photograph this vital mangrove system as part of an educational project on sawfish.
